10/18/24 Update

Yesterday I made some homemade chicken noodle soup, a big batch.  I needed something comforting.  I also put some short ribs in our slow cooker for dinner.  The thought of another sandwich right now is just not appealing!

We had someone remove our downstairs bathroom vanity and all the baseboards.  I nice young man, JD.  He cleaned up after himself which I was very grateful for, not all workers take the time to sweep up. When he was getting ready to leave, I asked him what was next for him, and he said lunch and two more jobs like ours on the island. I offered him some chicken noodle soup, at first, he declined but he said, “I could smell it downstairs; it smells so good.”  I told him I was making him a to go container of soup that he could take with him. Hopefully it brought him some comfort, as it did me.

In the afternoon I made some flight arrangements for an upcoming trip, and I found a dog/house sitter via Rover.  She is going to come over on Saturday to meet the dogs.  I ran a few errands for Scott off the island and then upon coming home I decided to just feel my feelings.  A lot of sadness. There is so much to get done, I know it will take weeks, but I just could not bring myself to take on another task. I napped and just allowed myself to be sad.  I know this too shall pass.

Dinner was delicious, Korean short ribs with rice and a salad. The full moon was amazing, and we sat on the back porch and watched a 1988 Steven Seagal movie called Above the Law.

Today I took a long hot shower, dried my hair and put on some makeup.  First time in over 3 weeks.

Thomas, our FEMA adjuster called me this morning and was able to stop by our home to do his inspection.  He has been doing this work for over 30 years.  He was quick to show me his ID and he also reviewed my driver’s license.  There are a lot of scams happening so the FEMA employees are really making sure you know they are legit.  He even gave me a letter to review about what he was doing today. He was using an app on a tablet, and we went through everything we had lost and was damaged.  We should hear back from FEMA in a week if they will cover anything.

Scott is headed to Nashville today on a 10-day trip.  He will be staying at our daughter and son-in-law’s home while enjoying our two grandchildren.  He will get to see our middle daughter as well.  Lucky him!  He will attend a work conference in Nashville starting Tuesday then head to Durham, N.C. to cheer on his beloved Duke Bluedevils when they take on SMU Saturday night.  This is what getting on with your life looks like post hurricane.
